LAUSANNE Ziggy Ansah Jersey , June 8 (Xinhua) -- Candidate cities Almaty (Kazakhstan) and Beijing (China) will present their respective bidding projects on Tuesday to International Olympic Committee (IOC) members in the Swiss city of Lausanne in a bid to clinch the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
June 9 will see both delegations conduct presentations and answering questions in the Olympic Museum, while further 2022 candidate city promotional activities will be held to IOC members on June 10.
Beijing is now entering the final stages of a process which may see China's capital become the first city ever to host both summer and winter Olympic Games.
Formally announcing its bid to the IOC as a candidate city in November 2013, the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games Bid Committee was set-up in January 2014 after being approved by the State Council, and was one of the three cities selected by the IOC's Executive Board on July 7, 2014.
Oslo (Norway) subsequently withdrew its candidacy later that year, leaving only Almaty and Beijing in the bidding race.
Building on Beijing's 2008 summer Olympics, which "contributed significantly to the development of the Olympic Movement and the spread of Olympic values," according to Beijing Olympic Games Bidding Committee, China hopes to bring the Winter Olympics to the country for the first time.
The Bidding Committee has expressed its commitment to prioritising the athletes' wellbeing above all else, while ensuring sustainable development and supporting pragmatic economic planning.
According to the 2022 Evaluation Commission's report released earlier this month, Beijing seeks to incorporate winter sports into people's lives, which will ultimately improve overall fitness and health, while offering a regional concept intended to develop a winter sports market for over 300 million people in China.
Beijing and the nearby Yanqing and Zhangjiakou will be used to host different events, and half of the 12 projected venues already exist.
"If the Winter Olympics are as slick as the Beijing Summer Olympics, then it will be a superb event," Local Government Official Mark Pemberton, from the UK, told Xinhua.
Particularly remembering the superb architecture of the Bird's Nest stadium, he thought that it was an "excellent idea to use some of the 2008 facilities, and that working on different sites is not a problem given China's efficiency."
The Lausanne-based meetings, taking place on June 9-10 are crucial in influencing the IOC ahead of the final July 31st vote taking place during the committee's 128th session in Kuala Lumpur this year.
Out of the 101 members entitled to vote in July's ballot, around 85 will be present in Lausanne this week, where country delegations will be able to showcase their respective projects in the city's Olympic Museum and Palace Hotel.

VANCOUVER, April 26 (Xinhua) -- A row that erupted this week between Canada and the United States over Canadian softwood lumber exports proves that Canada must expand its lumber trade to China and other Asian markets, Canadian officials said Wednesday.
NEW TARIFFS
Canada's government and the lumber industry must quickly diversify their export markets to reduce reliance on the United States, Premier of Canada's British Columbia province Christy Clark said.
"We have already increased our softwood lumber exports to China by over 2,000 percent with strong progress in other markets," she told reporters gathered at a lumber yard in the Vancouver suburb of Maple Ridge.
"We are going to continue to work on that. It is our hope that one day our markets will be so diversified that we don't need another softwood deal with the United States," she said.
This week, the United States slapped Canadian softwood lumber with new import duties ranging from 3 to 24 percent, starting next week.
In recent decades, U.S. administrations have occasionally blasted the Canadian lumber industry as unfairly subsidized, claiming that Canadian softwood is being "dumped" into the U.S. market at costs that undercut U.S. forest producers.
The U.S. lumber industry argues that because most Canadian timber is harvested on government-owned land, the resulting low prices for the right to harvest that wood has kept Canadian lumber below market value.
The new tariffs applied to Canadian wood by the Trump administration is a "shakedown" that mirrors similar unsuccessful attacks on Canadian lumber by the U.S. industry and government in the past, said David Emerson, B.C.'s special trade envoy to the United States.
"We're going down a path we've all seen before," he told reporters on a conference call. "It's egregious. It's terrible."
He said the Canadian federal government needs to fight the tariffs aggressively through every legal means as it has done successfully in the past. But Canada's lumber industry must diversify in the meantime, he said.
LOOKING TO CHINA
"Hopefully (this fight) will cause Canadians to reflect deeply about the importance of building trade bridges with other parts of the world, and for British Columbia, that's really largely going to involve Asia," he said.
Canada exports about 4.8 billion Canadian dollars (3.54 billion U.S. dollars) in total forest products to China annually, including about 1.6 billion Canadian dollars (1.18 billion U.S. dollars) in lumber.
Over the last ten years, Canadian forest product exports to China have climbed from 5 to 15 percent of the country's total forestry exports -- still just a fraction of the lumber that Canada exports to the United States.
There are currently no import tariffs applied to Canadian softwood by China, according to the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC).
Derek Nighbor, FPAC's CEO, told Xinhua in a Wednesday interview that he travelled to China three months ago as part of a B.C. government trade mi.
